Client Profiles Here are some examples of the types of clients that we are currently working with. High Tech Professional(s) Single, late 30's professional at their employer for a number of years with substantial stock options. An investable net worth in excess of $1MM, some options exercised, some vested but not exercised. They have come to us for help in developing an option strategy, perhaps an early financial independence scenario where they can take time out of the work world to pursue lesser-paying interests. We have worked them to develop the initial financial planning strategy, and then a stock option and investment plan. In additional, we work with these types of clients to develop an estate plan which may also include developing a charitable gifting strategy. As part of an on-going advisory relationship we also help them find tax and estate planning professionals and then work with those advisors to provide a coordinated plan of action. Our goal is to help introduce this client to the full range of financial and life planning decisions that they need to consider given their financial situation, regardless of their age. We are there to help in every way possible. Successful, Two-Income Couple with Children One member of the couple is a successful professional at the executive level, the other has their own business. They have also inherited some wealth along the way. With two young children, they have a number of estate planning, life insurance, and education funding needs. We have worked with them to develop the initial strategy then build an investment portfolio support those goals. In addition, we help them establish relationships with tax and legal professionals to handle the other parts of the financial planning picture. In the case of inherited wealth, we also have helped the client attempt to get a handle on issues such as cost basis so that they can make educated decisions about whether to retain or sell a particular investment. It's not unusual for us to get into discussions about leasing vs. buying cars, what kind of mortgage to consider, or what they should negotiate for in a business relationship. Our goal with this type of client is to provide them with the most holistic financial planning advice possible and to assist them in keeping on top of their financial goals while devoting the least time possible to the effort on their part. Divorced Woman We have dealt with a number of women over the years who are either seeking a divorce and are weighing their options or have come to us after the fact. In each case, we have worked with them to develop short-term strategies such as cash flow management and an assessment of their current assets. Then, we begin to walk them through the steps of developing their own long-term plan, including estate and insurance planning with the help of insurance and legal professionals. In these cases, depending on the age of the client we also begin to look at the possibility of long-term care insurance or other alternatives. Our approach is a sensitive one, and looks to follow the pace of the client. Non-Traditional Couple We work with a number of less traditional couples, whether they are part of a same-sex partnership or have just chosen not to marry. Obviously, there are unique planning and legal issues that these clients face. We work with them to address those issues, and then coordinate with other advisors as needed, to help them accomplish their goals. We also find that many of these clients are interested in different investment strategies such as socially responsible investing, so we work with them to identify investments that fit their criteria and risk tolerance. Our goal is to provide non-judgmental, personalized advice that will help these clients achieve their goals. |
